How much tile weight a plastered wall can carry

A gypsum plaster wall takes about 20 kg per m² of tile and adhesive, and plasterboard with no plaster finish about 32 kg per m², under BS 5385-1. Large porcelain and natural stone can pass 20 kg per m² before adhesive, so the wall may need a stronger background before heavy tiles go up.

What are the weight limits?

BS 5385-1, the British Standard for internal wall tiling, gives limits for the tile and adhesive together:

Gypsum plaster finish: about 20 kg per m². The tiles are only as strong as the plaster's bond to the wall behind it.

Plasterboard with no plaster finish: about 32 kg per m², on a properly fixed board.

Plasterboard with a plaster skim: treat it as plaster, about 20 kg per m², because the skim is the weak layer.

Cement-based tile backer board: more than plasterboard; the board maker publishes its figure and the fixing it needs.

How do you work out what your tiles weigh?

The box or the tile maker's data sheet gives the weight per m² or per box. Add the adhesive: a thicker bed, as used for large or uneven tiles, weighs more. Many 9 to 10 mm porcelain tiles weigh close to or over 20 kg per m² on their own, so on a plaster finish they can pass the limit before the adhesive is counted. Thin ceramic wall tiles are much lighter and rarely a problem.

A feature wall of hexagon tiles: the weight that counts is tile and adhesive together, per m² of wall.

What if the tiles are too heavy for the wall?

The options are to take the plaster finish off and tile onto the board or the wall behind, if that is within its limit; to line the wall with cement-based backer board fixed to the maker's instructions; or to choose a lighter tile. On a stud wall, the studs and fixings need to suit the board and its load. A tiler should check the wall before quoting for heavy tiles, not after.

Does painting or old tiles change the limit?

Yes, downwards. Tiling over paint relies on the paint's bond to the plaster, and tiling over old tiles adds their weight to the new ones. Both are reasons to strip back to a sound surface when the new tile is heavy.

Commonly quoted tile weight limits: plaster about 20 kilograms per square metre, plasterboard about 32 tiled direct and less if painted, cement backer board higher. Common questions

How much weight can plasterboard take for tiles?

About 32 kg per m² of tile and adhesive on plasterboard with no plaster finish, under BS 5385-1. With a plaster skim, treat it as about 20 kg per m².

Can you put large porcelain tiles on a plastered wall?

Only if tile and adhesive together stay within about 20 kg per m². Many large porcelain tiles are heavier, so the wall needs a stronger background first.

Is tile backer board stronger than plasterboard?

Cement-based backer boards carry more weight and are not damaged by water. The maker publishes the load and fixing details.
